Rajon Rondo Profile - 2007 Draft Prospect
Rajon Rondo (PG 6-2, 175) is a very interesting draft prospect. He didn’t gain notoriety until his junior year of high school, and in his senior year he was considered one of the best prospects in the country, and for good reason. He was so good that his freshman year that he won the starting point guard spot on Tubby Smith’s Kentucky team. Rajon’s best attribute is his speed; he is probably as fast as TJ Ford. Also like Ford, he has hops. Although both of them are small point guards, they can both dunk and even throw down some alley-oops. He is a great finisher who has excellent control of his body while in the air, which allows him to make baskets even after he is fouled.
Rajon also is a great ballhandler, which compliments his speed greatly. He gets in the lane with ease, and he is great and finding the open man in traffic near the basket or finishing, like I said earlier. He is a killer on the fastbreak, always finding the right man. The only problem is that its hard for teammates to keep up with him, but that isn’t really a problem anyway. He is usually calm and in control but sometimes he tries to do too much, often leading to turnovers, but this is typical for freshmen playing against such good competition. Last year, he did average 3.5 assists, but he also had 2 turnovers per game.
Rajon really focuses on defense, and his athleticism really helps him with this. He also has a large wingspan, and this allows him to surprise his opponents by stealing the ball from them. He averaged 2.6 steals last year and was good at pressuring the point guard when he brings the ball up the court.
The 2 main things Rajon needs to work on are his jump shot and his strength. While he did shoot 51% from the floor, most of his baskets were in the paint and/or on the break. He seems afraid to shoot 3s at times, so he must work on this in the future. If he shoots tons of jumpers a day and lifts weights, the game will become much, much easier for him because people will have to respect his shot, allowing him to use his speed to blow by them.
Rajon has no idea how long he wants to stay at Kentucky. He is relying on GMs feedback to figure out when he will go in the draft. He may go after his sophomore year, but after his junior or senior years is more likely. If he is guaranteed a top-10 spot, he will most likely bolt. He could possibly be a great classical point guard, one that is all about setting up others and playing great D
Projected Ratings: C C B+ B D A
