Mardy Collins - 2007 Draft Prospect
The former Philadelphia college basketball powerhouse Temple hasn’t lived up to their reputation the past decade. Nowadays, people only hear about Temple when John Chaney orders hits on Martelli’s players. But that should all change when Mardy Collins (PG 6-6, 205 pounds) gets the attention he deserves.
Even without Dickie V hyping him up, this kid is one of the top players in the NCAA. Standing 6 feet and 6 inches tall, he towers over your average point guard. While most tall point guard prospects don’t handle the ball too well, Mardy can, and he is a great leader to boot. Although he doesn’t have teammates that can score very much, he still trusts them with the ball and gets them their open shots, for his crossover dribble forces the D to really commit to him. He uses his height to his advantage by using his post up game to take get easy buckets over smaller guars. The consensus is that his point guard skills are his strength. His assists would be higher than 4 a game also if his teammates could score worth a damn.
He gets all the shots he wants at Temple and he takes advantage of that, scoring 17 points per game last year. His midrange shooting game is solid and he has a nice pull up, but his outside shot needs work, for he only shot 28% from 3. It seems like he suffers from Allen Iverson syndrome in that he gets all the looks he wants and puts up a nice ppg but shoots a low %, and this could be due to the defense focusing on him.
His defense is pretty good, even though he isn’t overly athletic. He can run and play the entire 40 minutes, which he usually does, but he isn’t the physical specimen that some other point guards coming into the draft are. He did average 2.8 steals per game last year, and he always seems to be in the right place, so he has it down mentally. Somehow, Mardy managed to lead his team in rebounds per game with about 6 a game, so he is a hard worker who fights for boards.
Lastly, Mardy is known to be clutch. This year he scored 25 points against Chris Paul and his Wake team, while getting 5 assists and 7 steals. He put up 23 and 6 vs. Duke, 13 and 9 vs. Auburn, 23 points vs. St. Joes, and 11 dimes vs. Maryland.
Mardy says that he really loves it at temple and wants to play there for 2 more years, so he should be a good prospect for the 07 draft. In my opinion, he will most likely be a good role player in the NBA but no star. He is solid in all areas and should excel at the next level.
