3 Point Shooting
The participants were given 25 shots from beyond the arc, 5 from the right hand corner, 5 from the right wing, 5 from the center, 5 from the left wing and 5 from the left corner. The balls were passed to the shooter at the chest, and then another assistant ran at the shooter in order to simulate a real game experience.
Participant: Wayne Ellington
Result: 12/25
Evaluation: Ellington has a great looking jump shot. Most of the shots rimmed in and then out which was quite unfortunate. The 3 point line is a bit beyond his range, 2-3 feet in, Ellington is money. Fairly good under pressure, was consistent and not streaky.
Participant: Ante Tomic
Result: 13/25
Evaluation: Surprisingly, Tomic as our second participant outscored Ellington. The 7'2" power forward/small forward has an ugly release however converts on most of his shots. Unlike Wayne, he was very streaky, hitting 6, then missing 5, knocking down 8, then missing 4. Just from the looks of this, he seems very dangerous.
Participant: Mustafa Shakur
Result: 13/25
Evaluation: Shakur scored the same as Tomic. His release was fine, same with his posture whilst shooting. Consistent, on any other day he could have knocked down 15/17. When our defender didnt get out in time which occurs on occasions, Shakur drilled every shot when he was left open.
Participant: Rajan Rondo
Result: 9/25
Evaluation: Rondo struggled big time, mainly due to the fact that our defender was 6'4" and Rondo is only 6'2". When left open however much like Mustafa, Rondo nailed every single shot, not even looking like missing.
Dribble Jump Shots
This activity required the participant to start at the center line, dribble in to the top of the three point line, cross over and head either left or right, take one dribble and pull up for a jump shot. Participants were required to take 5 shots from the left hand side, and 5 from the right.
Participant: Marcus Williams
Result: 9/10
Evaluation: Williams was very confident with his shot however came off the crossover slowly which may have given him a slight advantage. Has a nice release and good technique, definetly one of the best shooters I have seen to date.
Participant: Damir Markota
Result: 5/10
Evaluation: Markota was 1 foot outside of his range every time. He too was slow off the dribble mainly de to his height. Markota had a sweet looking release and shot, however a step inside the college three point line is his range.
Participant: Mardy Collins
Result: 9/10
Evaluation: Collins was strong off the dribble and put up 10 confident shots up out of 10. His finess and power in his soft touched jump shot impressed many scouts.
Participant: Lance Thomas
Result: 8/10
Evaluation: Another great shooter ran this activity. A jerky looking jump shot, however it seemed as if it was impossible to guard as he lent backwards, much like that of Allen Iverson.
One on One
Draft prospects took each other on one on one. No possesion, win by two, fouls, count by ones, first to 11.
Greg Oden 11-3 Jason Smith
Smith struggled to contain Oden due to his power and array of dazzling post moves. Oden got offensive rebound after offensive rebound under no pressure by Smith. However, Smith did throw a couple of good pass fakes to fool Oden, indicating that he has some sort of on court awareness.
Earl Clark 11-1 Victor Claver
Clark ended up toying with Claver in the end, too strong, too powerful, too skillful. Clark did force many turnovers trying to embarass the young European, the only point for concern, however his strong defense got him back the ball. Clark showed virtually no range as he would get the ball, take a dribble, cross Claver up and go to the rack and dunk it 99% of the time.
Daniel Gibson 11-9 Rajan Rondo
The best matchup of the competition was won by a 2 pointer by Gibson from beyond the arc. The game was very physical with both guards showing off immense skill in a well fought out battle. Picking one over the other seems almost impossible, however due to Gibsons superior handles, I think he will get the nod come draft time.
Josh McRoberts 11-6 Brandon Wright
In a surprise result, Dukes Josh McRoberts out matched top 3 prospect Brandon Wright, often dunking the ball fashionably to notch points up on the board. In the play of the tournament, McRoberts burnt Wright off the dribble from the corner, went up and under the ring and jammed it home one hand. Even with the loss, Wright was impressive, showing off very KG-like post moves. He was un lucky that he couldnt even buy a basket.
Two on Two
Players were given free choice to pair up with someone. Interestingly enough, Greg Oden paired up with Wayne Ellington and Earl Clark with Al Horford.
Oden and Ellington 11-9 Clark and Horford
It was all Gregory in this exciting 2 on 2 matchup which brought the entire gym to a stand still. Veteren like post moves, rim shattering dunks and Ben Wallace-esque blocks were all on for show as Greg Oden scored 9 of his teams 11 points. Ellington did well defensivly, however could not stop Clark when he got into the lane, finishing with 4 points and 7 assists. Horford struggled against Oden and only scored off Clarks penetration. Still, a lottery prospect.
Collins and Markota 11-1 Brewer and Williams
Collins was sensational and put on the performance of the tournament, taking both Brewer and Williams to the rack, out to the 3 point line and in for pull up jump shots every time he touched the ball, scoring all 11 of his teams points. Team mate Damir Markota simply smiled as he watched Collins dominate and notch up their win.
Oden and Ellington 11-8 Collins and Markota
Mardy Collins once again scored all 8 of his team points, however let his team down defensivly, allowing opponent Wayne Ellington to also score 8 points. Oden was dominant on the defensive board and in helping Ellington contain Collins to an extent. Oden won MVP honours and shed the all two on two team with Mardy Collins.
