Top 10 Free Agents: 2006
1. Shaq
The Big Aristotle is now a free agent after Gm Joe declined his contract offer of undisclosed terms. Joe said its nothing against Shaq, but he just wanted to use that capspace to bring in another good player, because he is absolutely certain that Shaq will be back. Shaq loves money, and Joe can offer the most, so look for the Heat to retain the big man, even though he will get a max offer from all of the 6 teams that far under the cap.
My prediction: Miami ($)
2. Amare
The Former teammate of Shaq, Amare Stoudemire, is also a free agent and in the long run could be a better signing than Shaq. They didn’t play that well together, but Amare was dominant on the bulls, consistently having 30-12 games. STAT is definitely being targeted by Boston, NY, NO, Utah, and Portland, but and look for him to leave Chicago to one of them because he wants to win immediately.
My prediction: Utah (best team of the above, no PF)
3. Yao
The Asian Sensation, fresh off a finals appearance, wants his money, and rightfully so. He is one of the best centers in the UBL, young, 7-6, and a marketing machine. The Rockets better hope they can bring him home, and he is loyal and greedy, so he will probably return unless he is massively lowballed. The same teams gunning for Amare will probably shoot for Yao.
My prediction: stays in Houston
4. Ben
Ben Wallace, arguably the best defender in the UBL every year, was his dominant self last year, averaging and double double of 10-12 and nearly 3 blocks. While his offense isn’t really there, his defense more than makes up for it, and would be a great addition to any team. He is greedy and not very loyal, since he was underpaid all those years, and who knows if Bilal is rebuilding or sticking with what he has, so I think he could move on from Detroit. Someone will throw a max at him.
My prediction: NO Hornets (need a big to go with trio of guards, if not there than Portland, but they got Theo and Humphries already)
5. Terry
One of the fastest players in the league, the high-sock wearing Jason Terry is a great shooter, ball handler, and defender, the total package. Being on of the top assist men in the league and shooting phenomenally, he’ll get a huge offer from someone. With the Mavs plan to get under the cap next year, don’t look for him to be resigned.
My prediction: The team that needs everything, the Bulls
6. KVH
Keith wants to come back to Dallas, but with Prez rebuilding it looks like he can’t. Someone will gladly take on the tall jump shooter. He’s a nice offensive weapon to have as a complement to a good defensive team. Look for the usual suspects to push for him, along with the Raptors and Nuggets also. He could possibly be an MLE steal.
My prediction: I’m gonna go out on a limb and say Denver, who could play him at SF and Melo at SG
7. Finley
He played great for the Cavs all year as a complement to Lebron, but there was nothing he could do in the Eastern Conference Finals to make up for the loss of JKidd for beating his wife. His jump-shooting and even his underrated defense could be an asset to any team, and he really wants out of Cleveland. Barring a max deal from Dane, I see him going for around 8 million or so for a few years since he is old.
My prediction: New York…they have plenty of good bigs, and no sg/sf
8. Harrington
Al played well as a backup last year for the Sixers, getting a solid 10 and 7 and providing a spark for the Sixer offense. I’m sure the Sixers want to bring him back, but with him and Webber both being free agents, it would be hard to keep both and avoid the hard cap in a few years. Since they are in a win now mode, I think they will go with Webber, since he is more of a traditional big man. Al could start for a few teams in the league, so he should get a nice little offer.
My prediction: Chicago, after they lose Amare early they’ll need some semblance of a big man
9. Webber
Like I said above, I think he’ll return to the sixers rather than Al because he is a better rebounder to grab all of those misses from Marbury and AI. Also, he is more of a force on defense and a good distributor, so it should again work out well in Philly. He wont get anything near what he was paid, but he’ll likely get around 7 million to start.
My prediction: Philly (very loyal and wants to win)
10. Damon Stoudamire
I don’t see Damon Stoudamire returning to the Cavs after how much Dane was pissed at his performance in the ECFs, so even though he is loyal look for him to sign elsewhere. He is mainly good for his offense since his D is below average, but he could possibly start for a few teams. Most likely will be an MLE signee.
My prediction: Grizzlies (loaded outside of PG)
