The Miami Herald- Today the Miami heat traded last years starting point guard and town's favorite white guy, Kirk Hinrich, for power forwards Charlie Villanueva and recently drafted Shelden Williams. The team had a gigantic whole at power forward due to Lamar Odom being moved back to SF this year, where he played best.
Kirk is one of the better young guards in the league, but with the arrival of veteran Andre Miller from the Nuggets, Kirk was looking at backing him up this year. The tension was high, and everyone knew one had to go, most likely Kirk because Joe said, "Andre fits our team better. He is more of a defender than Kirk, and we need him to distribute rather than score, since Lamar, Vince, and Shaquille can put up points."
Still, the Heat are glad with their new move because it gets them an even younger player who can do a number of things. He can score a bit inside and out, defend, run the break, and he is an excellent passer, just like the rest of Joe's starting lineup. They hope the eyebrowless Villanueva can be more than just a freak show to scare children away. They'd like him to become a lot like Lamar Odom, except for more of a rebounder. Already having Lamar, they should have a very tall and physically dominant lineup this year.
The addition of Shelden Williams, the 16th pick in last night's draft, doesn't hurt either. Joe was caught saying, "I think Shelden could become a very solid 3rd big man in the future. He can already score inside better than many, he is very strong, and he fights for boards better than almost everyone on the team. He'll likely be sent down to the ubdl this year because Wayne and Desagana are better now." I'm sure adding the lotto protected first this year sealed the deal for Joe, since he can either keep it and get a pick likely to be in the teens, or trade it for an upgrade elsewhere.
If they can bring Diesel back like they are trying to, they should have an excellent shot at winning it all this year.
