Sorry I was going to PM one of hammi or Joer but I want to get this started.
Many young players are very overrated and I think the best way to build a contender is to start off with a nice young team like the Bulls (with Chandler and Curry). Look for instance, I just got Jason Maxiell who is undersized but gets the job done kind of like an Elton Brand. Let's compare Jason Maxiell to Dwight Howard in the UBL.
Jason Maxiell of the Cleveland Cavaliers
Dwight Howard currently on the Orlando Magic
Dwight Howard C 19 7'0'' 240 B D+ D B+ B A
Jason Maxiell PF 23 6'7'' 240 B C- C B+ B B
What is the big difference between these guys that makes Dwight potential, so high? I mean he is 4 years younger, 5 inches taller. Dwight's scouted potential is A and Maxiell's is B. However, Maxiell improved his defense to B+ while Dwight stayed the same, after training camp. I mean clearly(Letter Wise) Jason is better overall, but they both put up solid number. Now is Dwight overall trade value better then Jason because everyone knows him more then Jason who just came out of college last year. Clearly, you know that Jason and Dwight have similar games. They are both powerful, can rebound and play great defense. I mean in real life they kind of are the same big, athletic, as well as strong inside. Would Dwight Howard for Josh Childress be an even deal? Naw, because everyone agrees that Howard has an enormous amount of potential. However, the only guy who knows that is the Commish. While, guys like Troy Murphy, Jason Maxiell, put up solid numbers will they still be thought as better then Emeka Okafor and Dwight Howard. Let's see Troy Murphy is similar to Okafor because they both will be 15/10 guys. However, Okafor is a lot better blocker in the post, but Okafor will still have a lot more trade value then Troy correct? Why because A) Everybody knows and likes Emeka Okafor. B) Troy Murphy plays on the west end and doesn't really have a high market value in the NBA or UBL. Basically, I am trying to say guys like Dwight, Emeka, LeBron, Vince Carter, Kobe Bryant and Tracy McGrady. No matter what will always over shadow Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis, Richard Hamilton, Jason Maxiell, Troy Murphy and Emanuel Ginobili. I mean even though these guys have similar ratings most of the time potential or the name of the person is going to get you full value at the end of the day. Believe it or not I am serious and it is always going to be true in a Sim league.
Preseason Comparisons: # 1
Jason Maxiell PF 23 6'7'' 240 B C- C B+ B B
Jason Maxiell PF 17 32.8 13.8 9.5 2.6 0.8 1.5 2.4 .513 .710 .000
Jason Maxiell averaged 13.8 points, 9.5 rebounds 2.6 assists, .8 steals, 1.5 blocks and 2.4 turnovers. He shot 51% from the field and averaged 71% from the free throw line.
Dwight Howard C 19 7'0'' 240 B D+ D B+ B A
Dwight Howard C 11 29.7 15.4 8.4 1.9 0.8 1.4 2.3 .464 .707 .000
Dwight Howard had less minutes, but averaged 15.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, .8 steals, 1.4 blocks, 2.3 turnovers. He shot 46% from the field and 70% from the free throw line.
Basically, both played up to the same and Jason had more games, so it evened out a little more. I would rate them even, but in trade value Dwight wins.
Leaving some good players on the outside looking in.
Preseason Comparisons: # 2
Troy Murphy PF 25 6'11'' 245 B C D+ B+ A- B
Troy Murphy PF 14 32.6 14.3 10.4 0.9 0.9 1.1 1.9 .385 .753 .500
Troy Murphy averaged 14.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, .9 assists, .9 steals, 1.1 assists and 1.9 turnovers. He shot horribly from the field with 38%, shot 75% from the free throw line, and finally he shot 50% from 3 point land.
Emeka Okafor PF 23 6'10'' 252 B+ C- D A- B+ B
Emeka Okafor PF 9 34.9 14.2 13.1 1.3 1.1 3.3 3.3 .378 .552 .000
Emeka Okafor averaged 14.2 points, 13.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.1 steal, 3.3 blocks and 3.3 turnovers. He shot 37% from the field, a nasty 55% from the free throw line.
Who is better? I mean Okafor is a lot better at rebounding and blocking shots, but probably not better at anything else. He has more strength then Troy, but I'm not so sure about being better at the offensive end skill wise. Okafor would get a lot more value even though he played shitty this pre-season.
Preseason Comparisons: # 3
Emanuel Ginobili SG 28 6'6'' 210 B- A- C+ A C C
Emanuel Ginobili SG 11 35.6 17.6 8.3 4.3 2.7 0.0 2.5 .497 .667 .419
Emanuel Ginobili averaged 17.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 2.7 steals, 0.0 blocks and 2.5 turnovers. He shot 49% from the field, 66% from the free throw line and 41% from the 3 point line.
Ray Allen SG 30 6'5'' 205 B A- C+ B C C
Ray Allen SG 19 35.3 24.2 5.8 4.1 1.3 0.2 2.5 .469 .833 .373
Ray Allen had 24.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.3 steals, 0.2 blocks and 2.5 turnovers. He shot 46% from the field, 83% from the free throw line and 37% from the 3 point line.
If, Ray Allen and Emanuel Ginboili were both put on the block at the same time I think Ray would get more value. I mean forget about age but because he is Ray Ray and is a killer offensively I think most would want him. However, whats so bad about Gino. I mean we hardly ever here of him, but he is amazing. The guy can do everything that is asked and some. Finally, another example of how stardom in the NBA leads to a higher value in Sim leagues.
Many other players could be compared like Ray Allen, and Vince Carter. Paul Pierce or Tracy McGrady. I mean we all know T-Mac would get a hell of a lot more offers then Pierce would. Will people just judge by skill and not by names? Probably not. I guess we are going to have to wait and see, if guys start getting off players nuts and judge by talent. Who knows maybe its other GM's hyping up their guys for example, the Kings GM hyping up Darius, Okafor, Frye and Gordon like they are superstars. On another note, Guys like Marvin disappointed their teams that were waiting for them to blow ups, but Petro, and Telfair all surprised many. Finally, I don't think it will change as no matter what Jason Maxiell and Dwight Howard would never get the same value even though right now they should.
Stars always get the star treatment. Yes, even in Sim leagues.
That's it for my article.. This is my man B, This is my main D and I'm gone.
