A recap of the year in San Antonio:
San Antonio did the unthinkable: They traded the Miller and Duncan duo that had brought fans into the Alamodome for what seemed like forever.
A smug McCants was certainly not at a loss for words when the news was broken to him.
: What? I have to play with that punk Okafor? He better stay out of my way; it's going to be my team all the way.
This was the start of the pairing that San Antonio hoped would usher in the new face of Spurs basketball. It didn't work, as the Spurs failed to make the playoffs for the second straight season.
Heads rolled; long time coach Gregg Popovich was fired after the season ended and replaced by Brian Hill.
After Duncan was traded, Popovich looked like a chicken with its head cut off, often found muttering "What Would Timmy Do" under his breath.
- Popovich, using his Jedi mind powers to get McCants to stop hogging the ball.
Unfortunately, this ploy was in vain, as McCants chucked his team to a 39-43 record.
: I happy play basketball UBL. Me pass ball, me win, me happy.
Two's company, but three's a crowd?
This dorky looking kid is the point guard of the future for the Spurs. He isn't terribly athletic, but he is quite polished after just a few seasons in the UBL.
He is expected to start in the backcourt alongside veteran combo guard Jason Terry, after having a stellar training camp.
As McCants and co. were chucking their way into the lottery, the Spurs management put their heads together to find the right rookie to draft.
- HAVE YOU SEEN TYLER SMITH?
After years of excellent drafting, the Spurs finally screwed up. Instead of drafting Michael Beasley, they took Tyler Smith.
Who?
Tyler Smith.
I'm sorry, who?
Tyler Smith! 281-.... That's enough.
He just didn't have the work ethic that everyone thought he would have. He got into a scuffle with McCants after McCants reportedly compared Smith's shot to that of his grandmother's.
It ended up something like this:
Sadly, Tyler Smith is expected to be the starting small forward on the Spurs this season.
Things are looking dismal for Okafor
Emeka Okafor. The steady, solid machine in the paint. Just add water, and you've got a beast on the glass and in the low post. Unfortunately, he was finding it hard to rebound all of the airballs that McCants threw up last season.
Things went from bad to worse as it became very apparent that no one on the Spurs had made any significant gains in training camp except Roko Ukic.
To compound the problems, the Spurs added yet another goofy looking white guy to their roster. This time, the unlucky guy was none other then Zydrunas Ilgauskas, the Big Z.
Much will be expected of the Big Z as he pairs up with Okafor to form a strong frontcourt.
Zydrunas Ilgauskas: I not Tim Duncan, but I do my best.
: He's damn right he's not Tim Duncan. He better not try to pull any superstar bullshit here; this is my team.
Zydrunas has been playing with LeBron James for the past two seasons.
I hope you enjoyed reading this article as much as it was painful for me to write it.
This has been the year in Spurs basketball. May God have mercy on Emeka Okafor's soul.
